HOMEWORK/NAVIGATOR REQUIREMENTS
Junior Syndicate
Homework will be sent home on a Monday and expected to be returned, completed on Friday of the same week.
Homework tasks will include: reading and sight words (10 minutes per night), spelling (5 minutes per night) and a mathematics activity (to be completed over the four nights – approximately 5 minutes per night).
Students are encouraged to complete their homework by themselves. Parents/caregivers may need to read the tasks to their child and clarify meaning. If a task needs further clarification, please see class teacher before the due date.
READING:
Students will bring home a book and their reading log in their book bag Monday-Thursday. Please write the title of the book in the log book. Please listen to your child read and make a suitable comment, about the book, in the reading log. More able students can write their own comment. Feel free to alternate between parent/caregiver comment and child comment. Please ensure that reading books and book bags are returned to school every day. On Friday please ensure that Reading Logs are given to your child’s teacher. A poetry folder or poetry book will go home in place of a reading book, for the weekend.
SIGHT WORDS:
Please see the HOMEWORK SIGHT WORD READING GUIDELINES sheet inside your child’s homework book.
SPELLING:
Your child will have the Essential Word Lists and Jolly Phonics words that support our Jolly Phonics Training programme, in his or her homework book. Your teacher will indicate which Essential Word list your child is currently working on and which stage he/she is at for Jolly Phonics Training. Please choose the words your child will learn from the Essential Word list and the Jolly Phonics word lists and write them on your child’s homework sheet. Each week choose new words from the lists to learn. It is your job to test your child’s spelling each week, at home. If you feel he/she has mastered the words in the list, feel free to move to the next list. Twice a term we will test the children on all the Essential Word lists and record their progress. We also assess progress in The Jolly Phonics Training each term, in Week 8.
We recommend you choose five Essential Word List words and five Jolly Phonics words per week. This is a guide. Please remember to work at your child’s own pace.
If your child is working on Alphabet Sounds you will choose sounds, each week, to learn instead of words. Please refer to the Jolly Phonics Actions sheet in your child’s homework book. Your teacher will indicate which sounds have been covered that week.
MATHEMATICS:
Mathematic tasks/reinforcement games will be set for the week. According to the 20 minute timeframe, they will have approximately 5 minutes per night.
